Excitement beyond frustration. Often times, the behind-the-scenes of a business is kept behind-the-scenes. I thought, today, I would share some of my behind-the-scenes with you.
As an artist and entrepreneur, I wear many hats. I am the business owner. The creator. The bookkeeper. The marketer. The brainstormer. The writer. The problem solver. The product photographer. The photo editor. The researcher. The student. The planner. The purchaser. The saleswoman. The quality control. The shipper. The website developer. And much more.
A lot goes into owning a business, especially when you are a one woman show. This morning, I was printing greeting cards to fulfill an order, and was experiencing frustration due to the paper all of a sudden having a slight curl to it. This paper hadn't done this previously. This frustrates me to no end because I thought I had found a really good quality paper, which I was excited about. I want to provide you, my customer, with the best quality products I can. This is not okay with me.
I sent an email to the paper company asking them for suggestions on how to remedy this issue. Their response was, this sort of thing happens to paper in the colder months when we turn on the heat and the humidity goes down. They told me, put a humidifier in the room and it should help. I thought, okay, that is easy enough, BUT just because the paper may stop curling in my room with the humidifier, doesn't mean that it won't curl once it gets into my customers homes that may not have a humidifier. I wasn't quite happy with that solution.
I replied back asking if a heavier paper stock would have the same issue. They responded the heavier paper would be affected less by the lack of humidity. I will try the heavier paper and see how that works out. The thing is, heavier paper isn't cheap. I can only spend so much on paper before it isn't worth it for me to print my own cards. I can't charge $10 for a greeting card. That wouldn't work out very well.
The end solution may be to locate a vendor who will print the greeting cards and be more cost effective. I do like having that personal touch on some of my products and greeting cards are a good way for me to have that. I'm not ready to find a vendor just yet. I will continue with trial and error to find a paper I am happy with.
Frustration like that is a reoccurring theme for a business owner. I can't tell you how many times I've been so excited to find a perfect solution to my issue, only to be disappointed because something just didn't work the way I had envisioned it. I am constantly researching and trying different things in order to get closer to my vision.
My website has been modified multiple times, as I have found features closer to how I want it to be, yet there is always one thing here or one thing there that doesn't quite meet my standards. One day, I will be able to afford to design a website from scratch, with all the features that I dream of. Until that day comes, I am working with what I have and evolving along the way with those things I come across through my research.
On that topic, after getting over my frustration this morning, I came across something that brought me pure excitement. One of the websites I currently use to sell my art has a new feature that excites me beyond belief! This feature will save me soooo much time and allow me to spend more time creating art. This new feature will integrate with my own website. This feature is in beta mode, so I am hoping once I start integrating it with my website that it is just as awesome as I think it will be. Fingers crossed for its success! I will keep you posted.
One more thing that brings me excitement today. The photograph above. Take two on practicing long-exposure photography produced amazing results. Isn't this photograph just beautiful how smooth the water is? I am giddy with how much better my second attempt at long-exposure photography is compared to my first attempt. Practice makes perfect and next time will be even better.
And, one last thing. Happy Veteran's Day to all the men and women who currently serve and who have previously served in our military. I appreciate all that you are willing to do for the security of our country.
