National Wildlife Federation Photo Contest

The National Wildlife Federation Photo Contest is held annually, showcasing some of the world's best nature and wildlife photography. They encourage photographer's to donate some of their images to help their cause of saving wildlife species and their habitats. They choose several winning photos, give out some prizes and publish those winning photos in print and online.     I participated this year, submitting the 10 photographs shown throughout this post. I was completely amazed to see how many photographs were submitted. Last I checked, the count was at 18,779 and the deadline date for submissions is March 31. I...

Interview with Alexis Fedor for the Artists in Business Podcast

The interview I did with Alexis Fedor for the Artists in Business podcast is live today!! Check it out at http://www.alexisfedor.com/lisa-ullrich! Such an amazing opportunity as I am in the beginning stages of committing full-time to my art and photography. I am not an "in-the-spotlight" kind of person, so this was definitely way outside of my comfort zone. I was very nervous during the interview, but pushed through and am very happy I said yes to the opportunity. Sometimes we need to push through the uncomfortable to get to a better place on the other side. A big lesson we...

Excitement beyond frustration

Excitement beyond frustration. Often times, the behind-the-scenes of a business is kept behind-the-scenes. I thought, today, I would share some of my behind-the-scenes with you. As an artist and entrepreneur, I wear many hats. I am the business owner. The creator. The bookkeeper. The marketer. The brainstormer. The writer. The problem solver. The product photographer. The photo editor. The researcher. The student. The planner. The purchaser. The saleswoman. The quality control. The shipper. The website developer. And much more. A lot goes into owning a business, especially when you are a one woman show. This morning, I was printing...

South Mountain Reservation, NJ

South Mountain Reservation, near Millburn, New Jersey, is a beautiful and serene 5-mile loop hike with a panoramic view boasting a lovely waterfall. Read more about South Mountain here. The trails are a combination of dirt, stone and rocks, in addition to a few bridges and stairways to higher elevations.     The leaves have started to change into beautiful autumn colors, but there is still plenty of green remaining.       I was equipped with a tripod and ND filters for my first attempt at long exposure photography of the waterfall. We were disappointed when we arrived to...

40 is not the end of the world

Lisa Blake 2016 40 birthday Inspirations Thoughts

Last week, I celebrated my 40th birthday. Everyone seems to make a big deal (in a negative way) about turning 40, especially when it's a female reaching the dreaded age. It's as if life ends at 40. My Grandmother is 94 years old and still taking plane rides by herself across the ocean. The way I choose to see it, I've only lived 42.55% of my life so far. That isn't even half. I think 40 is going to be my best year yet. There is always the chance some crazy bad illness is going to find me and...
