We are comparing apples to oranges between Etsy and Handmade at Amazon. The pricing structure and types of products are completely different. Etsy is priced per listing, which have expiration dates and they charge a transaction fee for sales. Handmade at Amazon is priced per month for unlimited non-expiring listings, as well as a transaction fee for sales.
Etsy is not all handmade products. They also allow supplies, vintage items and digital downloads, such as small businesses who design logos and other graphics. Handmade at Amazon is strictly handmade.
Any artist may create an account on Etsy. Handmade at Amazon is by invitation only. Amazon reviews applications of artists to determine if they will be a good fit.
I believe it will. The higher upfront investment needed to participate in Handmade at Amazon will keep some artists, crafters and small businesses at bay. One drawback to Etsy is artists have a difficult time with pricing their work to allow for a profit. The competition is often extremely underpriced, which creates a self-fulfilling prophecy type of dynamic for artists with the idea that artists must be "starving artists." I don't believe that idea to be true. Art is a business, like any other, which has expenses that need to be covered within the pricing structure. The pricing of art currently listed on Amazon is already more realistically priced.
There are different types of buyers when it comes to art. Everyday people who buy art to decorate their homes. Art lovers who buy art because of an emotional connection to the piece. Art collectors who buy art for investment purposes. The pricing structure for each type of buyer varies dramatically. Artists have to decide which type of buyer they wish to market their work to. I think the differences between Etsy and Handmade at Amazon will help distinguish where each type of buyer will hang out. This alone could be a huge game changer for artists. No longer will artists be competing with other artists who really are not their competitors. I think each type of artist will find a home at either Etsy or Handmade at Amazon, with some who will be able to fall into both.
I think this is an exciting, defining opportunity many artists have been waiting for. Not to mention, artists are being offered the opportunity to have their work seen by over 250 million customers. This is a HUGE deal. Amazon is trusted for great customer service and fast shipping. For many people, including myself, Amazon is a go-to place when shopping for anything. Why not art.
